A Constellation of Blackness: Rendering Invisibility, Hypervisibility, Devaluation, and Triumph; (TRIUMPH)

Hand-screenprinted broadsides on stiff black opalescent Bullseye glass, black frit, dense white frit, kiln fired
20 x 30” each (set of 4)

This version of the Constellation broadsides was conceptualized and produced during Jackson’s monthslong residency at Visual Arts Center of Richmond, VA. In contrast to the glass’ fragility, the phrases fired into it are not. From poets Lucille Clifton, Audre Lorde, and Loré Yessuff to Shotgun Mary from Netflix’s Warrior Nun, these words speak to the triumph that comes with Black women’s self-actualization and recognition of their own strength, as spelled out in the phrase revealed in white: COME CELEBRATE WITH ME THAT WHEN I DARE TO BE POWERFUL, I HAVE CONTROL. I NOW MY WORTH AND I ACCEPT, ACKNOWLEDGE, AND ADMIRE THE WOMAN I AM.
