The campus buildings at Santa Fe Art Institute’s (SFAI) artist residency consist of minimalist, modernist structures designed by the Mexican architect, Ricardo Legoretta. Most notable are the row of concrete bollards that read as mysterious sentinels standing at the base of Building #30’s east-facing wall. One may perceive these as benches for sitting. However at night, the concrete capsules’ true purpose becomes evident as six squares of light—secretly concealed during the day—are brilliantly illuminated. Three of these blocks of light appear distinctly on their own, while the remaining three overlap one another.
These six stark light zones prompted me to imagine a large tableau projected on the wall surface. Thus I conceived, produced, and installed a site-specific artwork entitled ProjectingREVOLUTION! by placing a freestanding coroplast panel in front of each bollard. As night takes over day, the word “REVOLUTION!” slowly reveals itself as a large projected announcement onto Building #30’s sand-colored wall.
