YOUR FRIEND IN LOVE

Let There Be Light 2022
Piedmont Virginia Community College, Charlottesville, VA
Curated by Fenella Belle, Associate Professor.

Hand cut black craft paper

In early December, a few weeks before the longest night of the year, Piedmont Virginia Community College hosts Let There Be Light. This annual outdoor exhibition consists of various light-centered artworks and installations that illuminate the grounds surrounding the V. Earl Dickinson Building. For 2022’s edition, Jackson created an artwork in memory of Beryl Solla, Chair of the Art Department and co-originator of Let There Be Light. This artwork responds to and elaborates upon her signature valedictory phrase, “Your friend in art.”

Mounted inside a North Gallery window, this paper cutting uses the Dickinson Building as a lantern to illuminate the following phrases seen from the building’s exterior:

YOUR FRIEND FOREVER, YOUR FRIEND IN ART, YOUR FRIEND IN JOY, YOUR FRIEND IN LOVE.
